How to avoid job search burn-out while hunting for your next job

Published on: 27 May 2014

Hunting for that perfect job can be a long and bumpy road filled with stops and starts, and this can become very frustrating and de-motivating. That is why you need to approach the job search like any other project; with a well thought out game plan.

Organisation is key. Setting realistic and attainable goals will not only allow you to keep track of your progress, but it can be a great boost in morale to cross things off of your list. Setting aside a few dedicated hours each day with a goal of completing 1 or 2 tailored applications will allow you to be better focused and ensure you’re presenting the best version of yourself to potential employers.

Get some help. Job hunting can be a lonely process and it may become difficult to keep up the energy you started your search with. Including friends and family in your search will be like having your own personal cheerleading squad; celebrating every success with you and encouraging you to keep going when you feel like you can't complete another application form. Ask them how they would describe you to get some extra inspiration for your covering letters – and it’s always good to have another pair of eyes read over your applications, just in case of typos.

Get offline. When you feel you can’t spend another evening sitting at your computer, take this opportunity to brush up on your networking skills. Getting out there will improve your chances of being introduced to your new employer or colleague, and the change of scenery and some company is a great way to lift your spirits.

Get out and about. Taking time away from the process can improve your mood as well as your productivity, but too much of a good thing can have the opposite effect. Regular breaks should be factored into your plan, giving yourself some down time as well as something to look forward to. A trip to the museum or cinema with some friends, can actually reinvigorate your job search and make you more productive.

Look after yourself. When you are in the full swing of the hunt, it's easy to lose track of the other things in life. It becomes harder to keep the daily routine of eating well and getting the right amount of sleep. Looking after yourself during the hunt will keep your energy levels up and keep you feeling good. Exercise is also a good way to keep up energy and motivation with the release of those happy endorphins.

Stay Positive. The transition from one job to another can be difficult and sometimes the knocks can get you down. If this happens, dust yourself off and keep going and the rewards will be worth it in the end.

Good luck!
