The University estate spreads across two sites: in Durham City and Queen's Campus, Stockton. It comprises over 320 buildings ranging in age from 1076 A.D. to the present day. Durham Castle and the buildings around Palace Green are part of a World Heritage Site. Approximately 17% of the University's estate is over 150 years old. 

Today, the Estates and Facilities Directorate provides a number of essential services to Durham University and is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing the infrastructure and building fabric of the various campuses. In order to achieve our University Strategy, we need a word-class estate. We are making major investments, both in building new departmental space, teaching space, residential accommodation and student facilities, and improving the condition of our existing estate.

A new Assistant Director (Estates Operations) is now being sought to work closely with colleagues across the institution. The role reports to the Director of Estates & Facilities, David Loudon.

The Assistant Director (Estates Operations) is the senior professional with responsibility for the provision of a high-quality estate which meets the needs of the College and its strategy. This includes responsibility to provide effective leadership and give direction and management to the Estates Operations Team. The post-holder will play a major role in ensuring that the existing University estate is maintained; ensuring students, staff and visitors of the University enjoy an excellent experience.

A member of the Senior Leadership Team within Estates and Facilities; driving the Estates Operations function, the Assistant Director will be an excellent manager of people, you will have a sound understanding of stakeholder expectations, particularly those of students and staff. You should have a commitment to professional excellence, and proven experience of collaborative working with both professional and academic colleagues. It is key that you will possess excellent commercial acumen and the ability to identify, evaluate and pursue commercial opportunities.
