The UK Supreme Court came into existence in October 2009 when it assumed the responsibilities of the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords or Law Lords as they were known.  It is headed by a Chief Executive. Now in its 10th year the Court, we have recently brought our facilities management in-house and are recruiting a Deputy to support the Building Engineer.

This is a new and exciting opportunity to work in Grade II* Listed building and support delivery of justice in the United Kingdom and overseas.

The main purpose of this role is to support the Building Engineer in looking after, maintaining and undertaking activities which enhance the Court and enable the justices to undertake their role in the unique surroundings of the Middlesex Guildhall on Parliament Square.   The Deputy Building Maintenance Engineer will be required to carry our Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), be involved in the planning and implementation of project works, immediate reactive activities as well as identifying and planning for forward maintenance.  The Deputy Building Maintenance Engineer will also be required to engage with and oversee contractors, supplier engagement work effectively with the wider Building Management team.

Key Responsibilities

This is a dynamic post which will require the postholder to be adept and able to cope with the changing needs of the court and react effectively to any building maintenance requirements. 

Specifically, but not limited to, the postholder will be required to:

 Undertake day to day maintenance of court premises, including fixtures and fittings, and providing operational lead regarding building related projects.

Provide first line telephone/email support to Supreme Court building users for reactive maintenance requests; to ensure that their requests for assistance are dealt with in a timely fashion. Where works requests cannot be resolved this will be noted to the Building Engineer, verbally or in writing as soon as possible

Ensure that building services plant and equipment is operating safely, within the system design and parameters and to optimum efficiency.

Supervise and ensure safe working of appointment contractors, undertaking the necessary administration of site inductions, health and safety compliance, job completion and payment as necessary.

Support the necessary PPM Schedule for the Supreme Court including supporting the  Building Engineer in maintaining the PPM schedule and forward plan, ensuring that PPM is kept up to date and to advise the Building Engineer in an appropriate time scale of any reactive or life cycle (capital) replacement work necessary.

To lead on smaller scale approved FM projects and deliver against agreed targets; ensuring that works are delivered on time and within budget. Seeking the best value.

Ensure that Purchase Orders are raised in a timely fashion and approved by Director of Corporate Services and Finance as required.  Prompt payment to service providers will be ensured.

Where subcontractors are engaged, under the direction of Building Engineer, need to ensure correct site induction process is completed and maybe required to supervise works, with strict adherence to ensuring appropriate Health and Safety compliance.

To work effectively within the Building Management team.Representing the team as necessary at meetings, providing support where required and remaining professional and responsible for the teams overall output.

The successful candidate will ideally have previous experience in:

  • Conducting planned, reactive and preventative maintenance
  • Electrical testing, repair, inspection, fault-finding, wiring and installation
  • Machine fitting, breakdowns and maintenance
  • Building plant and equipment maintenance
  • General building maintenance and taking preventative measures to upkeep a building to a high standard
  • Working within and understanding of regulations including Health & Safety legislation
  • Problem solving and prioritising work
  • Working effectively within a small team

Essential criteria

  • Qualified or Part Qualified Electrician
  • At least 2 years in a similar role supporting the maintenance of a building or on multiple sites

23 days annual leave rising to 25 days after 1 year and 30 days after 5 years service plus 9 ½ Public and Privilege days per year (pro rata for job-share appointments).

The person filling this role has to be available for normal office hours and have the flexibility to work out of hours when necessary as this job may require occasional early/late, weekend, or out of hours working. Given the nature of the role supporting the maintenance of the building it is not suitable for those seeking home or more flexible working arrangements.

Nationality requirements

The UK Supreme Court is required to meet Civil Service nationality rules for all posts.  Any person applying for a post in the UK Supreme Court must meet the following nationality requirements:

You must be either:

  • a United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland national
  • a Commonwealth citizen or a British protected person
  • a national of the European Economic Area (EEA), including Switzerland
  • a Turkish national who has been lawfully employed in the UK for four years in any job, or lawfully employed for three years in a job within the same occupation as the post they wish to take up within the civil service
  • a non-EEA national who is the family member of an EEA, Swiss or qualifying Turkish national (as above) from another member state (non-UK) who has moved to the UK for an approved purpose
