Facilities Manager

Up to £58,000 per annum

Discover the perfect work/life balance – then combine it with genuine job satisfaction.

At Essex County Council, we are proud to support a highly skilled team of employees – many of whom are local residents. Working together to achieve great results for their communities and neighbours, our people have a shared vision of delivering exceptional public services. It will therefore come as no surprise that our current transformation programme in which we are seeking to make the most of our resources with partnership initiatives and improved ways of working, is being widely welcomed. And when you join us, you could be at the heart of this fascinating work.

We are currently seeking a dynamic individual who has the capacity to take facilities management responsibility for our £1.7billion property portfolio, with oversight of a £12million capital maintenance budget and an £8million partner contract. Across 350 buildings, you will ensure our employees have access to the most suitable working environments, and you will maintain our school estate. With every day presenting high-profile challenges, you will adopt ownership of strategic planning, tactical interaction and day-to-day operations. Working closely with our property colleagues, your work will cover a wide range of building types and sites, ensuring a financially sustainable future. Anticipating and mitigating risks, you will constantly seek out ways to improve how we work, and you will maximise the benefits of our partner delivery contract.

Knowledge, skills and experience

To make the most of this multi-layered role, you will have significant facilities and contract management experience in local government or a large corporation, with the capacity to balance the needs of multiple projects and stakeholders. Excellent communication and people management skills are essential, and you will have a good understanding of building legislation, governance processes and health and safety at work. You will have a degree in the built environment, property or facilities management, and you will hold professional membership of a property or facilities body. You will also have a comprehensive understanding of the directives to construction.

While many of the challenges that you face will involve planned maintenance, there will inevitably be a small degree of out-of-hours work – in instances of floods, building failures and so forth. We will therefore expect you to work flexibly, and in turn, we can offer you a highly competitive package that includes access to our desirable pension scheme, life assurance (of three times your salary), generous annual leave – plus the option to buy additional holiday. Optional benefits such as tax-free savings on childcare and discounted health and dental care are also available, and we will encourage you to develop your skills with ongoing training opportunities.

Crucially, we know that there is more to life than work. We are a motivated and enthusiastic team – but we want you to find an exceptional work/life balance. As such, you will be encouraged to make the most of our commitment to flexible working arrangements, including the chance to work from home for one day per week. So if you want a better quality of life – complemented by a high degree of job satisfaction – then we would be delighted to welcome you to our friendly and inclusive team.
