Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is seeking to recruit a Head of Health and Safety to play a key role within the University’s Estates and Facilities Directorate. 

QMUL is a unique, world-class global University with a long, proud and distinctive history.  With more than 28,000 students, 4,400 staff and an annual turnover of £512m, we teach and research across a wide range of subjects in Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Medicine and Dentistry.  Based in a creative and culturally diverse area of east London, we are the only London University able to offer a completely integrated residential campus, with 2,866 student bedrooms. 

The Estates and Facilities Directorate is core to the University’s strategic ambition to provide a world-class managed estate with excellent facilities for students and staff.  As part of the QMUL’s ambitious Strategy 2030, extensive focus will be placed on enhancing, growing and better utilising the QMUL estate portfolio to create a physical environment that supports our position as an inclusive, world-class university.  To support this commitment, we are seeking to appoint a Head of Health and Safety to lead the direction, strategy and objectives for health and safety across the Estates and Facilities Directorate.   

The Head of Health and Safety will work with colleagues at the highest levels within QMUL and also liaise with internal and external specialists, trade unions and other employee representatives and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) to develop estates policies and procedures that meet the requirements of the law and best practice.  A key focus will be to work closely with and support senior stakeholders, ensuring they are able to demonstrate visible understanding, compliance and management of health and safety within their areas of responsibility. 

We are seeking an individual with significant experience in a health and safety role across a large, complex organisation with a broad range of core activities.  With a relevant industry background and professional qualification, you will possess a proven track record of delivering health and safety management initiatives that drive organisational change and performance improvement.   To be a success in the role the appointed candidate will need the excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills required to operate influentially across a large organisation with a diverse range of stakeholder groups.
