The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution. The first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in 1961, Sussex is a successful, growing University with a top-20 place in the major UK higher education league tables.  The University has a beautiful and diverse estate located in Falmer, to the east of Brighton and Hove.  It is situated in the South Downs National Park and has amongst its buildings a core heritage estate designed by Sir Basil Spence.

The Head of Health & Safety is the professional institutional lead for all aspects of health and safety relevant to the core business of the University. The post holder will be accountable for developing and ensuring the successful delivery of the overarching health and safety strategy and the effective and timely implementation of an effective health and safety management structure. This includes developing, delivering and embedding an institution-wide health and safety culture and ensuring there are robust procedures in place for effective audit and monitoring. 

The post holder will have a wide ranging background across all elements of an organisation/institution and must be proactive in advising  senior leadership teams and others on all aspects of health and safety, and ensure the University is compliant with all  relevant legislation, policies and guidance. The successful candidate will hold a recognised H&S qualification such as a NEBOSH diploma and possess extensive knowledge and proven experience of auditing, risk management, emergency planning and compliance with statutory obligations.
