The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. With around 2 million visitors each year prior to temporary closure for the Inspiring People project and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country’s most important and popular galleries.

Reporting to the Head of Estates and Operations, the (MEP) Engineering Manager plays a key role at the National Portrait Gallery as part of the Gallery’s operational team.

The postholder will be responsible for the effective management of the Gallery’s engineering maintenance provider, ensuring effective value for money and the overall delivery of the Gallery’s engineering infrastructure of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) needs.   A key aspect of this role will be supporting strategic operational plans for the commissioning and handover stages of new engineering systems, prior to Gallery re-opening in 2023.

The successful candidate will have substantial experience of managing and developing engineering services and infrastructure within a museum, large visitor attraction or similar medium to large organisation. They will be customer focussed and hold results orientated leadership/management experience, project management skills and have proven experience of formulating and leading strategy and policy developments.
