Job Details

With more than 8,000 staff and 34,000 students, and a turnover of c.£680m we are a leading Russell Group University. Our heritage as the UK’s original ‘redbrick’ and civic university, is combined with one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in higher education. Quite simply, at Birmingham we make things happen. Home to world-class researchers whose work on everything from new cancer treatments to harnessing the power of atoms for future energy sources, makes a real difference to people’s lives - we provide innovative solutions to big problems. We think, recruit and compete worldwide. Our stunning, 300-acre Edgbaston campus is iconic.

Sustainability is one of the six pillars of our strategic framework and is woven into the others.  This includes our commitment to achieve net zero carbon by 2035 for scope 1 and 2 emissions and overall, by 2045. Sustainability is at the heart of our activities and a core value of the Estates Offices.

Reporting to the Head of Utilities, the postholder will be responsible for driving the decarbonisation agenda across the campus, including enhancing the standards of new buildings and refurbishments and develop a plan for a deep retrofit of buildings. You will also ensure the implementation of the University’s Sustainability Policy, Strategy and Action Plan within Estates and support the broader implementation across the university.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in delivering carbon savings across a comparable diverse and complex estate in addition to ideally a degree in a related energy/engineering discipline. You will possess a broad and wide-ranging knowledge of all aspects of energy / carbon management. Including energy metering and monitoring and targeting systems, energy auditing, building services, procurement of utilities and sustainability.

To arrange a confidential discussion, please contact our retained advisor Michael Hewlett of The Management Recruitment Group.

Closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday 8th May 2022.
