Estates Division

The University of Cambridge has the largest operational estates in Higher Education with some 370 teaching, academic and research buildings with a total footprint of 723,000 square metres, plus more than 1000 residential units.     The operational estate is valued at £3.4 billion and comprises a diverse range of teaching, research and support facilities housed in a multitude of building types from Grade 1 Listed buildings to state-of-the-art laboratories.

The Estates Division is the custodian of the University Estate, with responsibility for  high-level strategic planning and development, the delivery of new construction, refurbishment and asset replacement programmes, and the operation and maintenance of the estate.

The Position

Maxwell Stephens have been asked to recruit on behalf of Cambridge University for a Health, Safety and Wellbeing Lead.

This role is accountable to the Estates Division Directorate for all matters relating to the health, safety and wellbeing of staff, consultants and third party contractors working within and on behalf of the Division.  This includes developing and implementing the Estates Division’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing policy and processes, ensuring effective health and safety management, and providing periodic auditing and reporting.  

Your Role

You will lead the Estates Division H&S team and to drive high standards of health, safety and wellbeing performance and awareness across the Estates Division.

You will responsible for driving health, safety and wellbeing performance within a Division of 350 people with an annual capital and operational spend in excess of £200m. 

You will develop and implement an ISO 45001 compliant Occupational Health and Safety Management System within Estates Division, including all associated policies, procedures, training, awareness raising, periodic audits and reporting, based on the principles of Plan, Do, Check, Act.

You will be responsible for the implementation of a safety software solution (SHE Assure), ensuring its effective use for accident and near-miss reporting, health & safety audits and inspections, training records, risk assessments, permits to work and other safety related activities.

You will act as the Departmental Safety Officer and Wellbeing Champion for Estates Division.

Skills and Experience

You will hold relevant qualifications in health and safety such as a Masters, NVQ, BSC or NEBOSH national diploma.

You will have excellent communication & stakeholder relationship management skills at all levels as well as strong influencing and negotiating skills.

You will have significant built environment health and safety management experience along with experience of managing health and safety across multiple locations. You will also have a proven track record in implementing H&S Policy and Process improvement, site audits, H&S Strategy.

You will be a strong team player who uses initiative but with a consultative approach and have a commitment to excellence in service delivery.
