Job Details

UCL is seeking to appoint a Deputy Director of Campus Infrastructure & Operations to play a key role in the delivery and realisation of UCL’s engineering infrastructure masterplan / maintenance strategy and to act as a technical lead on all engineering and building fabric matters across our estate.

University College London (UCL) is a globally recognised Institution and one of the UK’s most successful Universities with over 12,000 staff and 38,000 students. The activities of UCL have expanded as a result of a number of mergers and academic and funding opportunities.

Our estate comprises of over 250 buildings valued in excess of £2bn including more than 4 million square feet of academic teaching space and 7,000 units of student accommodation. UCL is embarking on a 10-year Capital Programme which will see capital investment over the period amounting to around £1.2bn and including the development of a New University Quarter (UCL East) at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The UCL estate is complex, with a number of campuses and smaller sites across London and beyond, the primary campus being located within Bloomsbury. The portfolio of buildings is diverse, across a broad age profile that includes 23 listed properties. The university has 11 faculties that provide world leading research and education that cover a wide range of arts and sciences. The built environments that provide the settings for this research and education each have their own specific requirements. The building services engineering systems and infrastructure that serve these spaces is commensurately complex as are the building fabrics that form their construction.

The University is seeking to appoint a Deputy Director of Campus Infrastructure & Operations to lead the technical coordination of both engineering systems, infrastructure and building fabrics through a period of significant change, as we migrate from our dependence on fossil fuel heat generation to net zero carbon technologies. The Bloomsbury campus requires significant investment to address both life cycle refurbishment of systems, infrastructure, fabrics and net zero carbon transition of the older buildings and infrastructure.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Significant senior level leadership and operational management experience in managing large-scale campus-based estate in either a public or private sector setting with 24-hour operation. Very high levels of technical competence in either engineering or building surveying, and entirely conversant with both. Comprehensive leadership skills with regard statutory compliance delivery Demonstrable success in creating a culture of exceptional service delivery A high level of technical innovation balanced with commercial acumen Experience of budget management including setting and achieving financial targets

The role will suit individuals with a clear passion for innovative digitally enhanced solutions focused on safe, compliant and welcoming world class research and learning environments.

UCL aims to acknowledge, understand, and tackle structural inequities and unjust social power imbalances that affect our communities across the institution.  For this recruitment campaign we particularly welcome female applicants and those from an ethnic minority, as they are under-represented within UCL at this level.
